Abstract

Discussions on the priority of mothers’ and wives’ rights often generate misunderstandings among Muslim communities, particularly due to fragmented and dichotomous interpretations of hadith. This study aims to examine the status of mothers and wives from the perspective of hadith and to formulate a fair and practical understanding of priority of rights. This research employs a qualitative library-based method by analyzing relevant hadiths along with explanations from classical and contemporary scholars. The findings indicate that the Prophet Muhammad honored both mothers and wives, yet assigned them different responsibilities. A child remains obligated to respect, care for, and show devotion to his mother throughout life, while a husband is responsible for fulfilling his wife’s rights, including financial support, protection, and justice within marriage. Misunderstandings arise when these responsibilities are conflated, leading to conflicts over priority. This study emphasizes that determining priority of rights must consider real situations and needs, so that hadith functions as an ethical guide in fostering harmony within Muslim families.
