Abstract

This writing outlines the thoughts of one of the orientalists, John Wansbrough. In Qur'anic studies, he is known as a rather controversial orientalist, especially in his examination of the prophethood of Muhammad, the holy book of the Qur'an, and the continuity of tradition. In his studies, particularly in "Qur’anic Studies: Sources and Methods of Scriptural Interpretation," Wansbrough is regarded as more critical than defensive. He questions the evidence or guarantee of the originality and authenticity of the Qur'an. According to Wansbrough's analysis, the Qur'an is the result of interactions between various traditions and even a creation influenced by religions predating Muhammad's prophethood, namely Judaism and Christianity. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis. The results of this study indicate that Wansbrough's views were derived using two methods in researching the Qur'an: historical analysis and literary analysis. These methods focus on the consistency of the Qur'an's content with the logic of language and the stories contained within it. This led him to conclude that the contents of the Qur'an are not a new doctrine but rather a combination or intersection of pre-existing traditions.
