Abstract

This study examines the direction and urgency of an interdisciplinary approach in contemporary hadith studies in Indonesia, with an emphasis on integrating hadith science with the social sciences and humanities. As the second source of Islamic teachings, hadith requires a contextual understanding to remain relevant to social dynamics. Traditional approaches, while important, are often inadequate in addressing the complexity of modern issues. Integration with disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, history, and psychology is considered to enrich hadith analysis through a more functional and applicable perspective. This study discusses the theoretical basis for this integration, the specific contributions of each discipline to hadith studies—such as understanding the social context in which hadith emerged, its reception by society, and the psychological aspects of hadith teachings—and the methodological challenges faced, including issues of authenticity and relevance, objectivity of interpretation, and the need for dual competencies for researchers. This study concludes that an interdisciplinary approach not only broadens academic horizons but also makes hadith studies more responsive to contemporary issues, so that the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) can remain a contextual and enlightening guide to life.
